Rafael Nadal will look to maintain his unblemished 2011 clay-court record when he takes the court in Barcelona on Friday. Standing in his way of a place in the semifinals is No. 7 seed Gael Monfils.

Rafael Nadal and Gael Monfils will be squaring off for the ninth time in their careers when the two 24-year-olds do battle in the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open BancSabadell on Friday.

Nadal leads the head-to-head series 7-1, including 3-0 on clay courts. They faced each other twice last season, with the world No. 1 dominating 6-1, 6-3 on the slow stuff of Madrid before prevailing 6-1, 7-5 in the Japan Open title match. Monfils' lone victory over Nadal came via a 6-4, 6-4 hard-court decision two years ago in Doha.
This does not look like the right time for Monfils to pull off a second upset victory. The ninth-ranked Frenchman was sidelined for two months due to a wrist injury and lost to Frederico Gil in his second Monte-Carlo match last week. Monfils, however, has been relatively impressive in Barcelona and he booked his spot in the quarters by dismissing Robin Haase 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-2 prior to a 6-4, 7-6(7) win over compatriot Richard Gasquet.

Nadal is once again looking dominant on the dirt. The top-seeded Spaniard won his seventh straight Monte-Carlo title on Sunday, taking out David Ferrer in a straight-set final. Nadal is now 7-0 on clay this season and 26-4 overall following wins this week over Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Santiago Giraldo. Nadal has dropped a mere six games en route to the last eight.

"I will be playing against one of best players in the world who has reached the semifinals at Roland Garros," he said of Monfils, "so it will be a tough match."

This very well could be Nadal's toughest test of the week, at least until a possible final against either an in-form Ferrer or soon-to-be Top 10 player Nicolas Almagro. After three straight blowouts to open their series, Monfils has mostly given his favored opponent some difficult battles. Barcelona's No. 7 seed keeps the ball in play and can track down almost anything on clay, so he is going to keep Nadal out there for a while.

Still, count on Nadal advancing to the semis in straight sets.
