Rafael Nadal will bid for a sixth appearance in the Barcelona title match when he takes the court on Saturday. Up next for the world No. 1 is Ivan Dodig.
Nobody has come close to stopping the King of Clay on his preferred ground this season. Next in line to make an attempt? None other than unheralded Croat Ivan Dodig.
This is Dodig's first career shot at Rafael Nadal, but it is not coming on the right surface nor at the right time. Nadal won his seventh consecutive Monte-Carlo Masters title last week while dropping just one set. He is now 8-0 for the year on clay after a trio of wins at the Barcelona Open BancSabadell.
Nadal opened with routine victories over Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Santiago Giraldo before picking it up a notch in a quarterfinal clash against world No. 9 Gael Monfils. The top-ranked Spaniard caught fire with his forehand and hammered Monfils 6-2, 6-2 in just one hour and 15 minutes. Nadal has won 28 straight matches in Barcelona and is two wins away from a sixth consecutive title at the event.
If there is any good news for Dodig, though, it's that he is the midst of his finest year on the ATP Tour. The 56th-ranked Croat captured a hometown title in Zagreb (the first ATP triumph of his career) and is now an awesome 15-7 for his 2011 campaign thanks to four victories this week. After cruising past Vincent Millot in round one, Dodig took out two seeds--No. 3 Robin Soderling and No. 15 Milos Raonic--and dismissed Feliciano Lopez.
"It will be a great experience for me," Dodig said after getting the best of Lopez 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 on Friday. "Already I started in Australia playing against [Novak] Djokovic, who is one of the best in the world, so now Nadal in Barcelona. He is the greatest player, especially on clay. I will have to try and play my best tennis and enjoy the match.
"It's been a great week for me. I've played some great matches and I'm really looking forward to playing one more match."
Dodig is taking the right attitude into Saturday's semifinal, and he is absolutely correct that he will be playing just one more match. Nadal is going to win this one and almost certainly in straight sets, but Dodig's serve has been incredible this season and he can be competitive with that shot alone even on clay. Look for Nadal to prevail in routine straights, but Dodig is not going to lay down without a fight.
