In the most anticipated match-up of the French Open fortnight, 2009 champion Roger Federer will try to snap the 2011 unbeaten win streak of Novak Djokovic.
Until this year, Roger Federer enjoyed a prohibitive head-to-head record over Novak Djokovic. The Swiss man was 13-6 against Djokovic, with big wins in Shanghai and the year-end tournament. All of that changed at the Australian Open.
The Serb defeated Federer in straight sets at the first Slam of the year and he followed that victory up with two more in Dubai and Indian Wells.
Federer’s form at Roland Garros has been impressive so far. Until his quarterfinal match against Gael Monfils, the Swiss man rolled through his draw with a minimum of fuss. The Monfils match featured an error-prone Federer who sprayed too many backhands, but he was able to take advantage of a bad day at the office for the Frenchman to win in straights.
Djokovic got a free pass into the semifinals. His quarterfinal opponent, Fabio Fognini, withdrew from the quarters with a leg injury, giving the Serb 4 days of rest, which could perhaps work against Djokovic by throwing his rhythm off.
The Serb lost his only set of the tournament so far to Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentine played lights-out tennis for a set, but he couldn’t keep his intensity up.
Federer is the clear underdog in this semifinal. Not only has the world No. 3 lost the last 3 matches the two men have played, but his form has generally been off this year. Djokovic’s backhand is a beast of a shot at the moment; Federer’s one-hander is frankly no match. In addition, the Serb has been the best returner on the men’s tour.
