A familiar scene will grace the ATP World Tour on Sunday at Roland Garros. Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are facing each other in yet another Grand Slam final, this time for the French Open title.
There's a monopoly in the tennis world, and nowhere is it more apparent than in Grand Slam title matches. We will see it again on Sunday afternoon, when Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal--the sport's top two players--renew their scintillating rivalry in the French Open final.
Djokovic and Nadal have squared off on 32 previous occasions, with Nadal leading the head-to-head series 18-14. The Spaniard has won 11 of their 13 clay-court encounters, including a 3-0 mark at Roland Garros and a 2-0 record already in 2012. Nadal crushed a less-than-100 percent Djokovic 6-3, 6-1 in Monte-Carlo before cruising to a more indicative 7-5, 6-3 victory in Rome.
Of course, those numbers do not come close to telling the full story. The best rivalry in tennis--and one of the best rivalries in sports--has been featured in three (soon to be four) consecutive major finals. Djokovic has won all three; in four sets at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open and a classic 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(5), 7-5 marathon earlier this year at the Australian Open.
Nadal's Monte-Carlo win ended a tumultuous seven-match losing streak to Djokovic, and now he looks poised to end the three-match slide in Grand Slam finals. The world No. 2 did not drop a single set while rolling over Simone Bolelli, Denis Istomin, Eduardo Schwank, Juan Monaco, Nicolas Almagro, and David Ferrer. Only one set (against Almagro) went to a tiebreaker and 14 of 18 sets were blowouts of 6-2 or worse.
"The reason is probably playing one of my best levels on clay the last couple of matches; that's the reason for the results," the 10-time Grand Slam champ explained. "It's gonna be a very tough match and doesn't matter what's happened during all the tournament."
Djokovic earned four of his six victories in straight sets, including a 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 defeat of Roger Federer in Saturday's second semifinal. However, the Serb had to survive two consecutive five-setters earlier this week. After storming back from two sets down against Andreas Seppi, Djokovic fought off four match points to beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-1, 5-7, 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-1.
"I know that I have to be consistently playing on very high level in order to win best‑of‑five against Nadal here," the world No. 1 noted. "It's an ultimate challenge. But I believe that (the semifinal vs. Federer) was the best match of 2012 Roland Garros for me, so I've raised my game when I needed to."
Djokovic will have to take it to an even greater level for this one, because his opponent is in utterly dominant form at the moment. It will require a masterful start by Djokovic to put any kind of dent in the six-time champion's confidence. This is not a foregone conclusion like his previous matches, but Nadal is a heavy favorite for good reason.
