Rafael Nadal vs. Roger Federer XXV will take place on one of tennis' grandest stages; the French Open final. Nadal and Federer set up Sunday's highly-anticipated showdown with respective wins over Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.
The best rivalry of 2011 is giving way to arguably the best rivalry in tennis history for Sunday's French Open final.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will be squaring off for the 25th time in their careers when they collide for the Roland Garros title. Nadal and Novak Djokovic had already faced each other in four championship matches this year, but Djokovic's undefeated season came to an end at the hands of Federer in a semifinal thriller on Friday.
The best rivalry of 2011 is giving way to arguably the best rivalry in tennis history for Sunday's French Open final.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will be squaring off for the 25th time in their careers when they collide for the Roland Garros title. Nadal and Novak Djokovic had already faced each other in four championship matches this year, but Djokovic's undefeated season came to an end at the hands of Federer in a semifinal thriller on Friday.
Although he obviously won't say it, Nadal cannot be disappointed with the result of the second semi. The Spaniard is 0-4 against Djokovic in 2011, but he leads the overall head-to-head series with Federer 16-8--including 11-2 on clay. Nadal and Federer have faced each other twice this year, with Nadal dominating 6-3, 6-2 in Miami before battling through a much tougher encounter in Madrid for a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory.
Current form suggests that one of the best-ever installments to this great rivalry could be in the cards. A chink in Nadal's clay-court armor was exposed when he lost to Djokovic in both Madrid and Rome before struggling in his first two rounds at the French, but he has righted the ship. After getting past John Isner in five and saving eight set points in the third against Pablo Andujar, the five-time champion did not drop a set in wins over Antonio Veic, Ivan Ljubicic, Robin Soderling, and Andy Murray.
Federer, even more impressively, did not lose a set throughout the entirety of his first five matches. The third-ranked Swiss made quick work of Feliciano Lopez, Maxime Teixeira, Janko Tipsarevic, Stansislas Wawrinka, and Gael Monfils to reach the semifinals. A considerable underdog against an on-fire Djokovic, Federer delivered a remarkable performance and ended the Serb's 43-match winning streak with a 7-6(5), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(5) triumph.
"Beating Novak was maybe a good birthday gift for him because he lost (their) four previous matches," Federer said of Nadal, who turned 25 on Friday. "I'm going to play against Nadal, my main rival, in another Grand Slam final. We live for these moments."
And what a moment this could be. Federer has only been competitive in one of their three French Open title matches (a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6(4) Nadal victory in 2006), but the No. 3 seed is playing brilliant tennis and Nadal has not been as dominant as he was in his previous five trips to the final.
Their last two major finals went to five sets; Nadal prevailed in a 2008 Wimbledon epic and again at the 2009 Australian Open by racing away from Federer in the fifth. Count on another memorable one, with a slight edge going to Nadal.
