A highly-anticipated Roland Garros matchup has already become a reality as Rafael Nadal and Robin Soderling have made their way through the top section of the draw. The winner will advance to Friday's semifinals.
This may not be the very best rivalry in tennis, but Rafael Nadal vs. Robin Soderling is quickly becoming a salivating annual tradition at Roland Garros.
Nadal and Soderling will be squaring off for the eighth time in their careers and third time in the last three French Opens when they clash during quarterfinal action on Wednesday. Soderling handed Nadal his one and only loss at this tournament with a 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-6(2) stunner in the 2009 fourth round--without question one of the biggest upsets in tennis history. A healthier Nadal, however, got revenge in the form of a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 blowout in last year's title match.
Overall, Nadal leads the head-to-head series 5-2, including 3-1 on clay. All three of the world No. 1's clay-court victories came in straight sets, somewhat suggesting that the 2009 blemish was a borderline fluke. They most recently faced each other last season in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, with Nadal prevailing 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-1.
The eighth installment of Nadal-Soderling could be blockbuster, as both men appear to be heating up at just the right time. Soderling struggled with Ryan Harrison in the first round, but he has been in dominant form ever since. The fifth-ranked Swede hammered Albert Ramos, Leonardo Mayer, and--most impressively--Gilles Simon to reach the last eight. He is now a stellar 32-7 for his 2011 campaign, which includes titles in Brisbane, Rotterdam, and Marseille.
Nadal had more than his fair share of tribulations earlier in the fortnight. The five-time champion played his first-ever five-setter at the French Open and came back from two sets to one down to outlast John Isner in round one. Nadal then saved eight set points against Pablo Andujar in a tough three-set victory, but he picked up the pace to blow past both Antonio Veic and Ivan Ljubicic in straight sets. The top-seeded Spaniard, who won Monte-Carlo but lost to Novak Djokovic in Madrid and Rome, is 40-6 for the season and 42-1 lifetime at Roland Garros.
"I am not playing well enough to win this tournament," Nadal admitted after beating Ljubicic. "That's the truth. The thing is you have to be a realist, and I'm not playing enough well to win. We will see after tomorrow if I am ready to play at this level."
Because this is going to be contested on a relatively slow, heavy clay court, Nadal will not have to play at a championship level to prevail. While Soderling owns the exact flat, power game that is necessary to trouble Nadal, he is not quite at the top of his game and it's hard to imagine another Roland Garros shocker taking place regardless of the favorite's form.
Anything close to his best should be enough for Nadal to take care of business in four entertaining sets.
