Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will square off for the 23rd time in their careers when they meet in the Miami semifinals on Friday. The winner will go up against either Novak Djokovic or Mardy Fish.
Sony Ericsson Open attendees have Novak Djokovic to thank for their good fortune on Friday.
When Djokovic overtook Roger Federer for the No. 2 spot in the rankings last Monday, tennis fans immediately anticipated a possible Miami semifinal between Federer and Rafael Nadal. Now it is a reality.
Nadal and Federer will be going head-to-head for the 23rd time in their illustrious careers when they do battle in semifinal action. The Spaniard leads their head-to-head series 14-8, although Federer has won four of their seven hard-court clashes. They most recently faced each other for the title of the 2010 World Tour Finals, with the Swiss prevailing 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
While Djokovic is dominating the tour this season, Nadal and Federer are enjoying similarly respectable campaigns. Nadal has not won a title since last year's U.S. Open, but he owns an 18-3 record in 2011. The world No. 1 reached the Indian Wells final and so far in Miami he has taken out Kei Nishikori, Feliciano Lopez, Alexandr Dolgopolov, and Tomas Berdych, losing a single set to Berdych in the process.
Federer has one title to his credit in 2011, having defeated Nikolay Davydenko in the Doha final. The world No. 3 followed that up with a semifinal showing at the Australian Open (lost to Djokovic) and a semifinal performance in Indian Wells (lost to Djokovic again). Federer finds himself back in another semi following routine victories over Radek Stepanek, Juan Monaco, Olivier Rochus, and Gilles Simon."Obviously we have many memories from playing amazing matches against each other," Federer said of his friendly foe. "It's not even that unusual that we play each other in the semis, because it's happened at the World Tour finals back in Shanghai (2006 and 2007). I think it (will) be electric out there tomorrow night."
That's a gross understatement, because fans are starved for Nadal vs. Federer. It happened only twice last year and twice in 2009, plus they have not squared off in the United States since their first two meetings, both in Miami way back in 2004 and 2005.
Count on this one living up to all expectations, but a slightly slow hard court should give the edge to Nadal after three thrilling sets.
