One week after Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer went head-to-head for the Monte-Carlo title, the two Spaniards will battle for glory in Barcelona. Nadal is going for his sixth title in his last six appearances at the tournament.
Novak Djokovic has not yet stepped on the slow stuff in 2011, but for now the clay-court season is being dominated by Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer.
For the second time in as many weeks, Nadal and Ferrer will be going head-to-head for a significant title when they clash in the final of the Barcelona Open BancSabadell on Sunday. The two Spaniards just faced each other at the last hurdle of the Monte-Carlo Masters, with Nadal prevailing 6-4, 7-5.
Overall, Nadal leads the head-to-head series 12-4 including 9-1 on clay. Ferrer won their first dirt encounter seven years ago in Stuttgart only to see his more heralded countryman win nine straight. However, Ferrer dominated their most recent meeting prior to Barcelona by scoring a 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 victory in the quarterfinals of this year's Australian Open.
Unfortunately for the underdog, Nadal has only improved since a hamstring injury hampered his efforts in Melbourne. The world No. 1 finished runner-up to Djokovic in both Indian Wells and Miami before dropping just a single set--to Andy Murray--en route to his seventh consecutive Monte-Carlo triumph. So far this week Nadal has taken out Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Santiago Giraldo, Gael Monfils, and Ivan Dodig without conceding a set. Not even one set has been more competitive than 6-3.
Needless to say, though, this is also Ferrer's favorite time of year. In 2010, the world No. 6 reached the semis in Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, and Madrid to go along with a runner-up finish to Nadal in Rome. He is looking even better this season, with finals already in Monte-Carlo and now Barcelona in addition to a title on the clay courts of Acapulco two months ago. Ferrer booked his spot alongside Nadal in Sunday's championship thanks to straight-set wins over Carlos Berlocq, Victor Hanescu, Jurgen Melzer, and Nicolas Almagro. For Ferrer, only one set (a 6-4 decision against Almagro) has been closer than 6-3.
"Rafa is the best clay-court player in the history of the game," Ferrer said following Saturday's semifinals. "I will try and do better than last week, play my best tennis, and fight until the end."
Ferrer always fights to the end, which is a major reason why he is a staple of the Top 10 and possibly on the verge of the Top 5. He is going to make Nadal work for every point and should make it entertaining just like he did in Monte-Carlo. This will likely be Nadal's toughest test of the week, but count on the favorite capturing his sixth Barcelona title after two high-quality sets.
